Description: Welcome back to the Statman Dave YouTube channel! Today we’re talking about Why Arsenal Fans Should Be Hopeful. We’re taking another look at Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal after Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka lead the side to an impressive 3-1 win in the North London Derby. Did Nuno Espirito Santo’s Spurs merely meet them on a good day or is there genuine cause for optimism with the Gunners? ► SUBSCRIBE to STATMAN DAVE: bit.ly/StatmanDaveYoutube Arsenal have been without many of their key players for the start of the season, and it’s worth remembering that 2 of the 3 sides to get the better of them so far this season were last season’s Champions League finalists, Man City and Chelsea - so you could argue that the talk around them so far has always been a bit hyperbolic. However, they definitely needed to improve and they have! One of the biggest improvements has come from right back and Japan international Tomiyasu. The deadline day signing has provided a solid foil to Arsenal’s other full back, Kieran Tierney. Whilst Tierney is a dynamic wing back that gets up and down the left flank all day and usually holds the width in the final third, Tomiyasu is a lot more reserved and usually holds his position to create a back 3 in possession. The arrival of the physically-dominant and smart defender has given Arsenal a much better platform to build from, whilst the return of Gabriel has also aided their ability to build-up attacks. Aaron Ramsdale has also come into the side as the results have turned and that’s no coincidence. The former Sheffield United goalkeeper has outperformed expectation in terms of his shot-stopping ability whilst also adding personality to an often meek backline. His distribution has improved their play in their own third exponentially, too. ► CHECK US OUT ON TWITCH: bit.ly/SMDTwitch Whilst the defensive new boys create the platform, it’s the forwards who Arsenal fans should be most excited by, specifically the 3 behind Aubameyang. Emile Smith-Rowe and Bukayo Saka are the future of Arsenal football club. Both grabbed a goal and an assist in the North London Derby but Saka edged it for me. He finished the game with 83% pass accuracy, 54 touches, 4 tackles, 3 chances created, 2 shots 1 goal and 1 assist. Martin Odegaard looks capable of reaching the heights he did at La Real, where he was arguably the best player in La Liga for a spell, too and so things are looking pretty rosy for Arsenal at either end. Mikel Arteta has had plenty of stick during his tenure as Arsenal manager but he deserves plaudits right now. Not only has he become more mature and bolder in his big-game approach, but we’re also starting to see the squad-building job h has done over the past couple of seasons start to make a lot of sense. With the likes of Sambi Lokonga, Aaron Ramsdale and Ben White brought into an already young side, Areteta is building a team that will look to challenge sustainably in the future - potentially when there’s a void left by Pep. If he can build the next great Arsenal team in the background whilst having his side replicate their NLD performance and stay relatively strong in the short-term, he'll have done one hell of a job.
